Back Garden Pumpkin Patch 2023 (Part 3)

My first attempt at growing a pumpkin

If you haven’t read part 1 or Part 2, then you may want to so you know what I’m going on about. If you have, thank you for sticking around, this is where things actually get exciting 🤣

So, as you know, my first little pumpkin babies flower fell off before the Internet told me it would, and I was so worried that she had stopped growing. She hadn’t! then I worked out that there was a large chance she wouldn’t be ready for Halloween, but I didn’t care because she was my baby, and just watching her grow was enough to make me happy.

I also had a second little queen growing, who also probably wouldn’t be ready for Halloween, but again, I was just happy to watch her grow. I then realised that due to planting them so late, there was probably no chance of having a pumpkin ready for Halloween. I know better for next year now, so it’s not a fail in any way.

During one of my daily sits next to the pumpkins, you know, to watch them grow 🤣 I noticed a double male flower getting ready to open, and so the next morning, I ran out to see him in all his glory and he did not disappoint! What a stunning flower he was!

As the days seemed to fly past, the 2 little pumpkins kept getting bigger and bigger, and then one day, I noticed a third one growing that had been pollinated by the bees still buzzing around the plants.

This brings me to today. It is October 2nd, 2023, and I was planning to leave this post as a draft until my first was ready to be cut off, but we have more females still opening, and I’m shocked so I wanted to post this today so that my next pumpkin patch post is when it’s all dried and shrivelled so I can post an update on them all as my fiancé pollinated one of the 2 females that opened today and I’m going to use them as an experiment.

Hector’s post

Be unique by Hector’s post

* This book was gifted *

If you’re looking for the perfect kids’ book for 4 – 7 year olds, then look no further than Hector’s post. Their stunning ‘Be’ books are one of the most adorable personalised collections I have ever seen.

I was lucky enough to be given the option to pick which one of the books from the collection I would like to receive, so believe me when I tell you it’s very difficult to pick just one.

In the end, I decided we needed ‘be unique’, as you can see. The story involves a kind-hearted dinosaur who doesn’t know what he is, then with the help of our hero (my youngest Oscar in this case) he discovers what he is and that being different isn’t a bad thing.

Not only is this book one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read to my children, but it’s possibly the most adorably illustrated one I have ever seen. The effort put into telling the story through not just the words can clearly be seen.

I will, without a doubt, happily add the rest of the collection to our mini library and would highly recommend you do to.

Backgarden Pumpkin Patch 2023 (part 2)

My first attempt at growing a pumpkin

If you’ve headed here from (Part one), you’ll know that I was, for some unknown reason, completely certain that the only female bud we could find was going to die before a male bloomed.

I was right, I don’t know how I knew but I just did, my little lady bloomed and not a single male was ready to pollinate her, they popped up 3 days later, so she died, and to be completely honest I cried and considered pulling them up.

Male and Female flowers

I didn’t pull them up. Instead, my fiancé helped me search every single bud on every vine we could get to, in the hope of finding a few more females, and we did we found 4 more little ones growing. All 4 were different sizes, so I tried to hold out hope that one, just one would be open on the same day as a male.

To my suprise, the largest female we found didn’t flower first. In fact, it was one of the smaller ones, I spotted her turn yellow and checked on her almost every hour until I went to bed, like she’d open the same day she started her colour change.

second female to open

When she finally opened, there were plenty of males open to pollinate her but not a single pollinator to be seen. I had actually been sent a link about hand pollinating my a friend of mine that I kept sharing my daily updates to, so I set to work and pollinated her myself.

Que impatiently waiting and checking on the freshly pollinated flower every 30 seconds for 2 days, and then her flower just fell off, possibly due to the heat, and I had no idea what would happen next because Google wasn’t helping, so I just had to wait.

second female to be pollinated

When I noticed her flower had fallen off, it was only because I had noticed another female had opened. So I hand pollinated her and started to watch her every 30 seconds, and on day 2, there was absolutely no denying she was growing, she’d almost doubled in size! Plus, it showed that the first pollinated female wasn’t growing.

Plus there were soo many females that suddenly seemed to have popped up overnight and were almost all ready to start turning yellow. Meaning I couldn’t leave them alone, I was in the garden day and night watching them all grow and talking to them like a crazy person.

Backgarden Pumpkin Patch 2023 (part 1)

My first attempt at growing a pumpkin

Halloween has always been my favourite holiday, as someone who grew up in the UK and wasn’t allowed to go trick or treating. I can’t even explain why. (Maybe it’s because I was born in October, and spooky stuff was around me from day one.)

But because of this, I have always wanted to grow a pumpkin patch! This year, I finally stopped procrastinating and did it!! Well, my fiancé did most of the work, but our 4 year old helped me put the seeds in the ground, so I did it.

I did it!

Okay, okay, it doesn’t look like much, just mud, but under that mud are pumpkin seeds that we planted together (probably a bit too late and a bit too close together). It didn’t take long at all to start seeing the first signs of life, maybe a week or so. Obviously, I got ridiculously, excited over the tiny little babies in the garden.

Within a few days, they were double the size and more and then within a few weeks.. they were like huge, like I didn’t expect them to grow so fast. The size of the leaves genuinely amazed me and my fiancé. I literally checked them every single day for flowers because, obviously, I have no patience.

First signs of life

Then, while doom scrolling my way through Instagram reels, I came across some other back garden pumpkin growers and realised that, I didn’t do even half the amount of research I should have (let’s not forget I also didn’t pay much attention to what I did research) and started to panic.

Why was I panicking? Because there on my phone in my hand was evidence! Evidence that this little pumpkin patch I had planned could actually take over my whole garden if I didn’t come up with a solution.

My fiancé had to show me that this leaf was the size of his hand.

The actual chances of that happening with this patch I don’t know, but I also didn’t expect a single seed to actually grow, so naturally, my brain hit the panic button.

So the next move was to try and make them grow up. Wondering why I wanted to try and make them grow up? Have a look at pumpkin tunnels on Instagram, and you’ll see why. Now, obviously, I could tell it was too late to make a tunnel, but I didn’t think it was too late to try and grow them up. With only Pinterest scrolling as my research, I set my fiancé to work.

This man deserves an award!

They then started growing up, I couldn’t tell if they we’re actually climbing this contraption or not and then got distracted when I noticed the first female flower bud.

I literally went out to check on her every day, while also trying to find more because everything in me believed she would bloom before any of the male flowers and I can’t even explain why I believed that.

Oh, hey, pretty lady!

Sensory Play

What is sensory play?

Sensory play is play that focuses on activities that engage your child’s senses.

What does it do?

Sensory play helps your child to develop language skills and motor skills. It also helps with cognitive growth, promotes social interactions, and encourages experimentation.

Sensory play can also address two sensory systems that are often overlooked:

our proprioceptive system – the sense that helps us to coordinate our movements so we can walk, run, hop, skip, negotiate obstacles, or kick an object with precision.

our vestibular system – the sense that helps us with balance while we walk and run. It also helps us stay upright when we sit and stand.
